  • Keen sportsperson including;  rugby, cycling, golf, swimming
  • Had progressively stopped all activity due to issues following injury in September 2015

Assessment and inital thoughts

  • Initial consultation took place in April 2016
  • Had been injured in rugby match September 2015, with rapid bending forward and hyperflexion of the back
  • Pain in mid back had remained and was also affecting lower back, back was rigid, inflexible
  • All sports had stopped, work was also being affected by pain and discomfort experienced
  • No assessment, diagnosis or treatment had been sought from time of injury, in the hope somewhat it would all go away of own accord
  • Initial session only worked on peripheral areas of pain, lower back primarily, but not primary area due to lack of formal diagnosis
  • Urged client to get X-ray sorted via GP without which could not proceed

Treatments and outcomes

  • Following initial session client had X-ray which revealed fractured 12th vertebra which had now healed
  • Soft tissues surrounding the primary site were in spasm, probably with scar tissue and other soft tissue dysfunctions present
  • Referred pain was being experienced in lower back and upper shoulders
  • 6 x 1hour treatments followed over the space of three weeks for intensive therapy including; soft tissue release, trigger point therapy, frictions, massage with motion and other techniques
  • Remedial advice and guidance was also given
Outcomes - May 2016 onwards
  • Client is all but pain free
  • Range of movement is near normal
  • Has returned to playing sports and leisure activities
  • Is feeling far less anxiety and stress caused by the pain/discomfort
  • Has signed up for on-going maintenance massage/soft tissue therapy work
